High Mountain Pies in Leadville

Family friendly (over 20 local employees of all ages)? Yup.  Community friendly (regularly supporting Leadville through fundraisers and events)? Yup. Pet friendly? Yup. I think we all know the key word here isn't, "events.".  For over 20 years diners flock to the mountain for mouthwatering, UNIQUE pizzas such as the Road Runner with basil pesto base, mozzarella, chicken, seasonal squash, red beans, and posole, or the San Luis with a garlic oil base, mozzarella, braised pork in ranchera sauce, green chilies, cotija cheese, fresh avocado and cilantro. The Small Town Spots fav? That would be the Tuscan Sun also with a garlic oil base (If you've read enough on Small Town Spots you already know we're gluttons for garlic) and mozzarella, homemade Italian sausage, sun dried tomato, caramelized onion, pine nut, Romano cheese. The most original however, has to be the Crocodile, with a BBQ base, mozzarella, shrimp, jalapeño, bacon, cream cheese.

All of High Mountain Pies pies (not a hand slip!) are made with fresh ingredients, as are the homemade salad dressings (sesame vinaigrette.....yummmmm). See that sign on the door? It's there for a reason.

The Forks Mercantile and Saloon in Livermore

The Forks Mercantile and Saloon originally started as a Hotel back in 1875 by R.O Roberts, who had recently moved to Livermore, CO from Chicago, Illinois. "The Forks" was named because it sat at the fork in the road with Red Feather Lakes Road to the west and Laramie Road (now HWY 287) to the north. Indeed, "Meet me at the Fork's" has long been an expression in Livermore and don't let the small diner counter fool you, you're in for some good home cooking!

There's something for everyone here. There are deli subs, pizza (Thursday to Sunday), an espresso bar, and of course traditional restaurant offerings including burgers, wings, nachos, and the Small Town Spots' favorite Jalapeno Kettle Chips toasted with parmesan, and oil & vinegar. 25 years in, and housed in a century old building that was once a general store, it's the chill vibes (the VW bus outside with photos of Jerry Garcia, Jim Morrison, and Jimi Hendrix in the windows kind of give that away before you enter the door), local focus, and quality of ingredients that keeps bringing them in! The deli meats, locally-grown baby greens, homemade pastries, and multi-grain “Pioneer” bread are all produced with quality ingredients, and several of the entrees are smoked right many of the premises over apple and natural woods.

The menu items are as creative as their names, from the, "What the Fig" (a pulled pork sammy with fried onions,, bacon, goat cheese, and homemade jalapeno-fig sauce) all the way to the VERY popular, "The Holy Crap" (honey mesquite turkey, red onions, avocado, goat cheese, pecan smoked bacon and basil mayo on grilled multi-grain bread). Not to worry, there are plenty of micro-brews to wash everything down.

The traditional meats like ribs, chicken, pulled pork, and brisket are all out for display at the counter, as are the expected sides (collard greens, 'slaw, green beans with bacon and the like). Bodonsee Restaurant in Helen

This Small Town Spot (population just over 600) has been made over as a tourist attraction to look like an old-world Bavarian village, and you'll find most of the restaurants in town offer German themed cuisine. Bodonese, a creation of Master Chef Aurel Prodan and his wife Doina, is the most notable of the bunch.  When one thinks of German cuisine the mind immediately goes to Schnitzel, but there are so many equally delicious alternatives here (don't get us wrong, Schnitzels are a mainstay) all made from scratch.

If you want your cultural mind to expand give the Sauerbraten a go, it's a traditional German roast served with a potato dumpling and red cabbage. Or you can try the Rouberspiess (Schaschlik), which features grilled pork loin, red peppers, and onions served with Gypsy (onion based) gravy and a side of choice (Sauerkraut, German Potato Salad are favouries).. Fresh Bite Farm to Beach is a family run food truck is another youngin' (2016) of our Small Town Spots and like so many places to eat in Hawaii, the focus is on local, fresh ingredients. It's also a food truck, like so many, if not all the others. Actually we're going to go out on a limb here and state that every single restaurant in Hawaii is a food truck. I know, we're bold, just like the homemade sauces here. Give it for ranch, honey mustard, chipotle, chimichurri, and macadamia nut satay.  Add one, some, or all of those to organic chicken, local, grass fed steak, organic quinoa, and toss on some local avacado? You've got the fixins' for one incredible wrap, and the reason there's often a crazy lineup at the truck. Stop complaining. It's Hawaii. Enjoy the view.

Seven Brothers in Kahuku

At this local hot spot run by seven sisters (kidding) there are three passions : Family, friends (customers, but you'll soon become one), and food. There are 8 unique burgers to choose from, like the, "Sweet Umami Punch" (fresh pineapple mixed with smoky bacon and topped with a tangy teriyaki sauce, American cheese, and house sauce) or the, "Shem Burger" (guacamole atop smoky bacon, American cheese, and signature house sauce). As I'm sure you've guessed by now the beef is never frozen, and all the sauces are homemade.

There's just one thing that confuses us. For a local hidden burger gem, one of the more popular items on the menu, and we're talking POP. U. LAR. is the coconut macadamia shrimp with sweet chili sauce. Go figure, or as they say in Hawaii, "Aloha." They say that a lot in the state, and it can mean anything you want, apparently.

Be prepared for a lineup at peak times (it'll pass faster if you chat up the animals mounted on the walls), and also be prepared to bring an appetite as the portions here are gigantic. One could easily play football with a Pioneer Saloon potato (before it's baked to perfection and topped with teriyaki beef, sour cream, chives, and cheese). As expected it's all about the beef here, from ribs (when available) to steaks, the local favorite being the Wagyu top sirloin. That baked potato though.....

Less than two years old and weighing in at countless fan(atics), this hot spot has ALREADY been nominated as one of, "America's Best Restaurants." So what does the name mean? Beehive Augusta Tavern in Augusta

If there's any Small Town Spot on this list that deserves to have its history written about as much as its food, this place is certainly it. The Beehive Augusta Tavern dates back to the 18th century, making it a significant historical landmark in Kentucky. Originally constructed on land granted to a veteran of the Revolutionary, throughout THREE CENTURIES the building has been a private residence, a stagecoach stop, a general store, an office, a pharmacy, and now a restaurant. It has survived a fire, a flood, and possibly even bbbbbbbbthe odd bar fight.

Okay history lesson over kids, let's get to the grub. The tavern is renowned for its exquisite menu that blends traditional Southern flavors with modern culinary techniques. From succulent steaks to fresh, locally sourced produce, you'll find comfort food creations like mac ‘n cheese, mushroom risotto, garlic (!!) mashed potatoes, and honey bourbon bacon brussel sprouts. Personally, one Small Town Spots member always goes for the, "Kentucky Hot Brown" : An open-faced turkey sandwich topped with bacon, tomatoes, and Mornay sauce.

The side dishes are all also made from scratch and you'll have your choice among baked apples, blue cheese 'slaw, and macaroni and cheese, among others.

What keeps road trippers coming in again and again you may ask? Well that would be the way the food is MADE. It's hard to beat original recipes made fresh by hand every day, just like at home. It's not easy to replicate that, and Buckhead Mountain Grill does it perfectly.

Five Islands Lobster Co. in Georgetown

Sure there's other stuff than seafood on the menu but c'mon, we all know why diners come from miles to this modest hidden gem. Lobsters are pulled straight from the surrounding waters and you'll never see one in a tank, so get that bib on and start feasting with a side of homemade seafood chowder, homemade onion rings, or some fried clams (the best in all of Maine according to Down East Magazine).  Need some sauce with that? You won't find any tartar sauce packs around, instead you'll be lucky enough to accompany your dish with a signature tartar sauce with fresh dill and capers, a cilantro mayo with a kick of jalapeno and lime, or a mustard dill spread, all of which are 100% homemade recipes. Once Upon a Table in Stockbridge

This super quaint Small Town Spot focuses seasonal ingredients and local suppliers so as one may expect the menu is often changing based on availability, and some dishes can sell out quickly. That doesn't matter though when the result is freshness personified from local farmers and small business owners. We certainly love supporting local small businesses, too. Seriously, it's in in our name, look it up.

With a menu that varies with the season you may be thinking to yourself, "Well that doesn't sound too comforting." Well, you'd be mistaken, as the menu oozes comfort food, often with a twist. Grab some French onion soup with gruyere or an almond butter and jelly sandwich, and if you want more traditional opt for the homemade meatballs, a New York strip, or baked Mac n' Cheese.

This automatically brings us to a very valid question :  Why don't they just live there? Well that would pose a problem for the people who come from across the state at all hours for the incredible food, especially the breakfasts (FINALLY a breakfast spot made the list!). They travel the distance for specialties like French toast stuffed with pineapples, pecans, and cream cheese or The Goat & The Egg Benedict, featuring Bloomsdale’s own Baetje Farms goat cheese, avocado, grilled tomatoes, basted egg, and hollandaise. For lunch and dinner they come for comfort plates like country-fried steak, sandwiches, pork chops, ribs, and of course the favorite, "Bourbon Burger", a beef, pork, and brisket patty topped with pepper jack cheese, bacon, and a bourbon barbecue sauce. If you're thirsty, wash it down with The Kozy's, "Southern Lemonade with Wild Turkey American Honey, strawberries, mint leaves, and lemons or the, "Cucumber-Chili Bloody Mary" made with Sauza cucumber-chili tequila and a house blend of spices topped with cucumber slices, pickle spear, lime, lemon, and bleu cheese olives.

Originally (1863) this Victorian home and the rock building behind it were used as a cider factory, and in 1948 the home was turned into an inn. The cafe is family run and focuses on traditional comfort food from incredible steaks, pastas, chicken dishes, and the bread pudding that will make you want to move to Virginia City.,  The menu is not overly extensive (phew, less reading!) but that's often the case when your meals are prepared with fresh, high quality ingredients.

Reader's Digest and Taste of Home Magazine have both extoled the virtues of Nick's, as have many others. What can it be? Maybe it's the homemade chili, the homemade ranch, the homemade remoulade, or the locally made pimento cheese or locally made slaw. Come to think of it, it could also be the never-frozen local meats, hand-rolled each day. Or maybe it's the fact that nothing at this place is pre-made. Whatever it is congratulations, you're now in a cult, being welcomed by thousands of members who have long known what you are just discovering : Nick's Old Fashioned Hamburger House makes the best burgers in North Carolina. Sykeston Dam Bar & Grill in Sykeston

Might we have included this literal definition of a local hotspot on our list if it wasn't located in a town of just 100 people? If the food was disgusting, possibly. I mean c'mon, 100 frickin' people! Thankfully we don't need to worry because while not 5 star, the food is pretty darn good, and just what you'd expect and WANT for a quick bite along your next road trip. There's fried chicken dinners, prime rib with horseradish cheese, wings, burgers, sammys and lots of sides. The establishment often hosts local events and gatherings, making it a fantastic place to chat up locals and experience the life of a true small(est) town.

What else can you say about a place that has almost as many online 5 star reviews as it does people (and no they're not all written by the locals)? We were going to post a pic of the Sykeston's exterior (adorable) or the food (just as you'd imagine) but this restaurant till tells you everything you need to know about this cozy Small Town Spot. All charm. All the way.

The Ranch Steakhouse in Devils Lake

Coming up on its 80th anniversary The Ranch is still known as THE place in the region to go of you're looking for a damn good (sorry) steak. Yes you'll find homemade comfort as well, like meatloaf (from scratch and enormous), pot roast, and rich au gratin potatoes, not to mention an array of seafood dishes, but it's still all about the beef. From the prime rib or ribeye to the signature Filet Mignon, all are expertly cooked to your liking and accompanied with traditional sides.

You know all those landmark Small Town Spots with storied histories that you could read about for days on end? While we're sure The Ranch has one of those as well, its main story seems a simpler one : In 1946 it was founded as a steakhouse, ever since it has been a steakhouse, and it will continue to be a steakhouse. Sometimes simple stories are the best stories.

Homework time : Go online and try to find a bad review of this place. You may find a mediocre one but good luck otherwise. Also if it's so mediocre why does it consistently sell out of certain items (seriously, check before you go)? It's not the locals, I mean there are less than 800 of them! Nope, it's the countless road trippers who've been turning off Route 66 to check out the father and son run joint based just off of its reputation, one completely earned. They've won 400 first place finishes, the 2012 World Food Championship, and been featured on, "BBQ Pit Master."

As you might expect, it's all about the meat at The Butcher. Their brisket, pulled pork, and St. Louis-style ribs are ALL award winning, and do we dare mention smoked burgers made with a mix of beef AND smoked bacon are? Too late, we just did. If you just can't decide go with, "The Meat Locker" (which we did). Trust us, afterwards you'll be spending hours debating what you liked best (which we also did).
